Laminar shell structure of Antigonambonites planus (Pander, 1830) (Brachiopoda, Billingsellida)

چکیده

The order Billingsellida comprises brachiopods with laminar and fibrous shells, however, the data on their microstructure are scanty and the taxonomic value of differences in their shell structure is uncertain. The shell structure of clitambonitidine Antigonambonites planus was found to be laminar, not fibrous as previously considered; possibly this shows that it belongs to the suborder Billingsellidina. The pseudopunctae in the secondary layer normally are formed by deflected laminae and lack taleolae. Possible remains of the tertiary prismatic layer are described and the diagenetic changes are appreciated.

On Lison's Model of Bivalve Shell Form, and Its Biological Interpretation

In the half-century that has elapsed since the publication of W. D'Arcy Thompson's classic study On Growth and Form, there have been several attempts to explain rigorously the phenomenon of shell growth in the Mollusca (Huxley, 1932; Lison, 1949; Owen, 1953; Yonge, 1952; Stasek, 1963) and Brachiopoda (Rudwick, 1959; Krans, 1965). Apart from the comprehensive and undeservedly neglected paper of ...

Ultrastructural investigations on the anterior adductor muscle of a brachiopoda, Lingula unguis.

The brachiopoda, Lingula unguis, has a pair of anterior adductors located in the center of the shell. Each muscle consists of an opaque and a translucent portion which is constructed of smooth and obliquely-striated muscle respectively. According to our ultrastructural observations, the opaque portion seems to have two types of cells. They differ only in the diameters of their thick myofilament...

A New Notospiriferine Genus (spiriferida: Brachiopoda) from the Permian of Tasmania

Farmerella exoporosa gen. et sp.nov. is described from cold-water Permian (Bernacchian-Lymingtonian) rocks of Tasmania. The new taxon is essentially homeomorphic with Glendonia McClung & Armstrong, 1978. However, Glendonia possesses a micro-ornament of low, elongate microspines behind shallow, elongate grooves, whereas Farmerella gen.nov. (as in Notospirifir Harrington, 1955) has deep, elongate...

Functional disposition of the lophophore in living Brachiopoda

The shape and disposition of adult brachiopod lophophores relate to inand excurrent apertures. to the internal water irrigation system, to shell orientation at substratum and to near-bottom currents. The arrangement of the mantle canals and gonads of different lophophores are induccd by water circulation. The trocholophe (2% of living species) is considered as a plesiomorphic character which re...

On a transitional and turbulent natural convection in spherical shells

Laminar and turbulent natural convection inside concentric spherical shells with isothermal cold and hot boundaries is numerically investigated up to Rayleigh number values Ra 6 10 and Pr = 0.71. The study utilizes direct numerical simulation (DNS), large eddy simulation (LES) and Reynolds averaged Navier– Stokes (RANS) approaches for investigation of the laminar, transitional and fully develop...
